DISTRICT SAYS PARENT INVOLVEMENT A MUST IN NEW STANDARDS ROLLOUTWINNEMUCCA, Nev.— School district officials say they will need every parent’s support to effectively roll out new state standards that begin to take effect this year. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) initiative is a voluntary, state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear, educational standards for English language arts and mathematics. The Nevada State Board of Education joined over 40 other states in October 2010 by adopting the new standards. Humboldt County School District Superintendent Dave Jensen said that bonding together by a majority of states makes this a landmark time in education.MORE WINNEMUCCA GRAMMAR SCHOOL ASKING FOR HELP WITH CONTESTWINNEMUCCA, Nev.— The Winnemucca Grammar School is asking for the community’s vote to purchase a new sound system for its stage. The Raley’s Reach Grant Program is an online grant program, which makes available a total of $50,000 dollars to be granted to schools in partnership with Unilever. In all, five regions are represented in the contest, including the State of Nevada, northern California, central California, the San Francisco Bay area, and the Sacramento area. Winnemucca Grammar School is the only Humboldt County school nominated from the State of Nevada region. MORE SUPERINTENDENT HONES FOCUS ON EDUCATIONAL CORE VALUES, BELIEFSWINNEMUCCA, Nev.— Dr. David Jensen says the business of education always seems to be changing. In fact, the new superintendent said a common refrain throughout education has been, “Just wait a year and this initiative too will pass.” “Too often that statement has been accurate,” said Dr. Jensen, “despite the fact that many other initiatives and expectations have become an everyday part of public education.” With so many forces pulling education in one direction and pushing it in others, Dr. Jensen said he felt it was time to simply remind the Humboldt County School District of some basic educational core values and beliefs that will never change.
