Human Growth and Development Course Outline
Grade 4
The following is as recommended by the Humboldt County School District
Human Growth and Development Advisory Committee and approved by the
Humboldt County Board of School Trustees.
Classes will adhere to the following procedures:
- The unit will be taught separately to each respective gender. A
letter shall be sent home informing parents the above topics were
discussed in class so parents may use the opportunity to discuss the
information with their children.
- No student will participate in any session without his/her parent’s
written permission. A parent permission slip
must be returned marked “yes” or “no”.
- The units will be strictly informational.
- Parents are welcome to attend any class session. Parents may wish
to attend a class other than the one in which their child is enrolled.
Prior arrangements should be made with the office to allow for seating.
- All student questions will be answered. Questions may be asked
in class or written for future discussions. Instructors may answer
questions in class or individually as deemed appropriate by the instructor.
- Emphasis will be placed on the idea of individual uniqueness and
differences, thinking for one’s self, impulse control, consequences
resulting from decisions, and preparation for adult life.

- Hygiene – general and those associated with gland changes
- Menstruation and Hygiene (Females only)
- Disease Prevention
- General Disease Transmission
- Prevention of disease through proper hygiene
- Risk Prevention
- Importance of talking with family
- Choices and consequences of poor decision making
- Risk reduction and promotion of self esteem and responsibility
