Humboldt County School District Goals

2003-2004

  1. The percentage of students passing in each area of the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) is of the greatest importance to HCSD.  Decrease the percentage of students not January 29, 2012 by ½ of the non-passing percentage of the previous year by July, 2004.

  1. HCSD high school students have their first opportunity to pass the HSPE as sophomores and then again as juniors.  Passing the HSPE early in a student's high school career is important.  It is the goal of the district to improve the passing rate for the first time sophomores and juniors taking the HSPE in math by 10 percentage points by July, 2004.

  1. An average of 20 to 25 percent of our high school graduating seniors enroll in either a university or community college.  Out of the 61 graduating seniors in HCSD, 30 graduates or 49% were enrolled in remediation courses in a University or Community College System in Nevada (UCCSN)  It is HCSD's goal to decrease that percentage by 20% by July, 2004.

  1. The State of Nevada requires that Criterion Reference Tests that are aligned with Nevada State Standards be administrated at third and fifth grades and next year, at eighth grade.  It is the goal of HCSD to have the majority of their students scoring in the Meets Standard and Exceeds Standard category.  In math, 49% of HCSD third graders met or exceeded standards.  In reading, 45% of HCSD third graders met or exceeded standards.  At the fifth grade level, 36% met or exceeded the standards in math.  In reading, 41% of the students met or exceeded the standards.  It is the goal of HCSD to increase the students in the areas Meets Standard and Exceeds Standard by five percentage points over the next two years.  This in turn will increase the overall percentage of students that are considered proficient.

  1. It appears through thorough test analysis that there is a trend of low scores in the area of math computation and measurement and geometry across all grade levels.  HCSD will move 10% of the students that are scoring in the bottom quartile on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) into the middle quartiles, and move 10% of the students from the middle quartiles into the top quartile by July, 2004.

  1. Every HCSD student deserves the opportunity to develop and excel to his maximum potential, in a safe school environment.  HCSD will insure that there is a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff.  The amount of reported incidents will be decreased by 10% at the secondary level (7-12) and 5% at the elementary levels (K-6) by July, 2004.
