Providing Educational Services to Limited English Proficient Students

Humboldt County School District recognizes a significant and dynamic Limited English Proficient (LEP) population.  Included in the District's Basic Philosophy is the commitment to ".meet January 30, 2012relation to the economic and cultural environment." and to ".provide the materials, equipment and instruction of such quality and diversity as to assure each child's safe attainment of the student's maximum potential." It is the policy of Humboldt County School District to maintain learning and working environment that prohibits any form of religious, racial or sexual harassment, and violence.  In keeping with this commitment, the following goals and plan have been developed by the District to provide educational services for LEP students.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

1.      Ensure that LEP students have access to an equal educational opportunity.

2.      Ensure that LEP students have the opportunity to become successful participants within the school setting and in society at large.

3.      Ensure that LEP students develop the ability to use English to communicate in social settings and in culturally appropriate ways.

4.      Ensure that LEP students develop the ability to use English to achieve academically in all content areas based on standards established by Humboldt County School District and the State of Nevada.

Humboldt County School District K-6 and 7-12 English Language Learner (ELL) Curriculum Guides, under Federal law, provides for the education of children with limited English proficiency through recommended models of instruction that are consistent with accepted practices based on the fundamental principles of language acquisition theory.

Each school will develop and implement one or a combination of the following types of programs: Content-based ELL (pull-out), Sheltered Content Instruction (Inclusion) Structured English Immersion, or where resources are available, Bilingual (Maintenance and/or Transitional) programs may be developed.  All schools shall follow the Humboldt County School District Policy For Providing Educational Services to Limited English Proficient Student found in the K-6 and 7-12 English Language Learner Curriculum Guides.
