PRESCHOOL PREPARATION
Three
months previous to the beginning of the Lowry Preschool, the students began to work on an
activity book. Students look for and collect
ideas for preschool activities. Their books
include: (1) snack ideas and recipes, (2) games, developing large motor skill, (3) games and learning activities, using small
motor skills, (4) painting and craft ideas, (5) playdough and clay recipes, (6) storytelling information, (7) concept lesson ideas (8) audio-visual information, and (9) possible lesson plan ideas for the day they
are the scheduled preschool teacher.
Lowry's child development students visit some of the local child care centers to
observe their preschools in operation.
The school nurse and local Red Cross instructors provide the classes with
information on fist aide, the importance of cleanliness and sanitation, as well as the
importance of controlling communicable diseases.
Lowry preschool does have limited space. Recruiting
preschoolers from the community has not been a problem.
The preschool usually fills up and has a waiting list. Each year the preschool first opens to those who
were on the waiting list the previous year, then to friends and family members of the
students, then to the community.
The preschoolers must have their own transportation to and from school. High school students are not allowed to miss class
time to transport students. PROFILE
OF THE PROGRAM THE
PROJECT
Each student in the child development program is assigned one preschool day in
which they are designated teacher. That day
they are responsible for planning the class time activities. All other class members help them set up
activities and carry them out. Each class
period must include a story, game, craft, and concept lesson. A snack will also be included in the activities
each preschool day. Projects are planned
around a central theme or topic for the day. The
designate teacher is responsible for organizing all activities for the day. The teacher is also responsible for telling the
story and teaching a concept lesson. Classmates
are assigned to help with various other activities. The
weekly activities will be posted in the classroom each week. STUDENT-PRESCHOOLERS
RATIO:
A 1:2 ratio is maintained in the Lowry Preschool, one high school student to two
preschoolers. The number of students enrolled
in child development varies so the Number of preschoolers enrolled also varies. The maximum number of preschooler enrolled per
class is 30. One or two child development
students are not assigned preschoolers. These
students rotate and fill-in in case of absentees or the need of extra hands with some
projects.
The child development teacher serves as the director of the preschool and oversees
all activities. TIME/DAY:
The
preschool operates two days a week, one session on Monday and Wednesday mornings and the
second session on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The
length of each preschool will depend on the number of child development classes which can
vary each school year. This year two classes
are scheduled back to back in the morning, allowing for a longer preschool. Lowry now has block schedule which means extended
time periods. This year with two classes back
to back the preschool time has been extended to two full hours which is a more realistic
time frame for preschool. FACILITIES/MATERIALS
The
preschool is located in the Lowry High Home Economics room. Materials and supplies are provided by the
school, students, and director. This year a
$15.00 donation preschooler is be accepted to help towards the purchase of snacks and
craft supplies OPENING
DAY Preschoolers
and parents/caregivers are invited to an orientation program the first day of preschool. At this time the director presents a brief
overview of the program and introduces the high school students to the preschoolers they
will be working with. Refreshments are
served. Time is allowed for child development
students, parents/caregivers and preschoolers to get acquainted. Parents/caregivers of the preschoolers are asked
at this time to share with the high school students that will be working with their child
pertinent information regarding (1) who will
be picking up the child, (2) any health
problems they need to be aware of, and (3)
name/nickname they desire the students call their child. GRADUATION
DAY
The
last day of preschool, parents/caregivers and family are invited to join the class in a
short and very informal graduation ceremony towards the end of the scheduled preschool
time. Diplomas are presented and refreshments
are served. MEMORABLE/MOST
ENJOYABLE ACTIVITIES
Preschoolers
as well as the child development students greatly enjoy the crafts, painting, and
playdough. When the weather permits going
outside to play games is a treat. The
children love the live animals that visit on occasion.
The Easter Egg hunt and Easter activities seem to be the most memorable. QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
