The School Police Department and the School Resource Officer Program (SRO) was established in 1998 as a component of the Humboldt County School District community Policing Partnership. Since its inception, the school police department has worked diligently to provide a proactive problem-solving partnership, by working closely with school officials, faculty, and local law enforcement, in order to enhance the safety of our schools. The SRO is the liaison between all local law enforcement, District Attorney, fire, and medical responders and is a sworn State of Nevada Category I Peace Officer. The SRO works diligently to promote a positive image on campus through interactions with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
Officer Jeff Dawson has been in law enforcement in Winnemucca for over 22 years. Formerly a Sergeant with the Winnemucca Police Department, Officer Dawson has now been with the school police for since 2004. Officer Dawson is responsible for each school in the district and includes various assignments such as, patrol, traffic enforcement, director of crisis response and investigations. Officer Dawson has also been a member of the Humboldt County Juvenile Department’s Diversion Court as a board member, coordinates the Humboldt County Juvenile Departments’ Teen Court for first time offenders, and has given many presentations on topics such as impaired driving, and is a member of professional organizations.
