Bus Zones


This sign means you are near a crosswalk in a school zone.
- When school is opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon, the area around the school is very busy and crowded. There many kids crossing streets during this time.
- Cars must stop to allow people to cross in the crosswalk.
- It’s important to remember that not all drivers of cars will see you so assume they don’t and look left, right, and left again when crossing. Keep looking as you walk.

When you are waiting for a school bus, you should wait at the bus stop, and stand far enough from the roadway.
Loading
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and the driver has opened the door before approaching the bus.
- Get directly onto the bus when allowed.
- Don’t hang out around the side or rear of a bus.
Unloading
- Always look to the rear of the bus before you step off the bottom step. Though it is illegal for drivers to pass a stopped school but it does happen.
- Take five big steps
straight off of the bus and away from the bus.
- Make sure that you make eye contact with the driver, and wait for the driver to signal you before you cross in front of the bus.
- Never go back for items on the bus or for any reason.
- Never bend down near or under a bus.
Walking near school:
When school is opening or closing it can be a very busy area.
- Children are being dropped off and picked up by parents and busses.

- If you must walk between parked cars, please look before stepping out into the roadway.
- Don’t ever run or play near a roadway and don’t ever run to catch up with your friends.
School bus Behavior
- The Humboldt County School District has a school bus policy for behavior. Your driver’s number one interest is your safety so you will need to be on your best behavior while riding the bus.
- Always listen to the driver for special instructions
- Sit quietly in your seat
- Do not jump around, get up from your seat to trade seats, fight, or tease other kids on the bus. This type of behavior is very distracting to the driver as it would be to anyone.
